We designed the shape with a continuous curvature and maximised the internal volume without affecting the airflow negatively. The inlet is finished in raw carbon so has no clear coat - which would not be able to withstand the heat generated from the turbo and exhaust manifold. The carbon construction allows us to keep the inside flow surface smooth which helps with reducing the surface friction and in turn allows airflow to move easier. We ensure strength and rigidity by maintaining a 2mm wall thickness throughout the part. Finally for added protection there is a heat reflective layer applied where the tube crosses the exhaust manifold. This reduces the radiant heat absorbed by the tube. The advantage of using carbon fiber over the traditionally used cast aluminium is mainly down to the thermal conductivity and the ability to keep the inside smooth. The table below summarises the advantages.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMinimising Heat Soak\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen the RS3\/TTRS accelerates, the turbo generates intense heat as it spools. Since the face of the turbo is directly connected to our CNC machined flange, we designed a silicon coupler to also act as a thermal barrier between the carbon tube and the metal flange. Internally the silicon has a spacer which separates the carbon and metal surfaces. This reduces the conductive heat transfer and therefore allows power to remain more constant since the inlet does not heat soak as quickly as the stock inlet does.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCNC Machined Turbo Flanges\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe provide a choice of turbo flanges which are all CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminium and anodised. The E9X stock airbox system is a brilliantly designed intake with an excellent flow path and feed system for ambient air. However on closer inspection, there are restrictions in the inlet tube connecting the airbox to the inlet manifold. By redesigning the tube yet maintaining the airbox, we have been able to allow the V8 engine to breathe with greater efficiency and therefore gain power. In addition to the new tube design, we also identified a further restriction in the air feed system. To overcome this we designed a scoop to allow an increase in airflow through the airbox. It is a 1-piece design which has no internal interfaces and therefore provides a much smoother path for the airflow to negotiate. Furthermore the geometrical transition is from a circular opening for the filter to the oval exit for the manifold. This is a much more efficient change in shape when compared with the stock tube which has to transition from a rectangular opening for the filter to the oval exit for the manifold. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFlexibility and Movement \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAn important challenge to overcome was the requirement of movement with the engine. Instead of using silicon couplers with flexible sections (which would introduce similar interfaces as the stock tube), we designed the tube itself to be able to move with the engine. The tube has a compressible neoprene band around the section which interfaces with the stock airbox. This section seals the tube to the airbox yet allows movement in and out of the airbox as the engine moves. By allowing the tube itself to move - we have been able to create a flow path which is as smooth as possible. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCarbon Air Scoop \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe E9X M3 airbox system is saturated with cold air from 2 feeds : a lower feed from underneath the headlamp and an upper feed from behind the kidney grills. The primary feed is the lower one from underneath the headlamp as it connects directly to the airbox with minimal change of direction and a large opening to the airbox. This is also a high pressure area of the car and airflow moves through the airbox from underneath to the exit at the top connecting to the exit vent in the bonnet. The other feed from behind the kidney grills which, although is a welcome addition, provides a much lower volume of air to the airbox than the lower feed. This is because airflow has to change direction through 90 degrees twice and also because the duct narrows down significantly before the entry to the airbox. \u003cbr\u003eLooking at the lower duct more closely, it becomes clear that the duct has a large ridge which comes back on itself just before the opening to the airbox. This acts as a barrier which inhibits direct entry of airflow to the box by reducing the entry speed of the airflow. \u003cbr\u003eBy designing a scoop to sit on top of the stock duct and curve up sooner to eliminate this ridge - airflow is now allowed to transition from the duct to the airbox without restriction. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe airflow path is much smoother and as a result, the velocity of the air entering the airbox significantly increases. This allows the intake temperatures to be lower than without the scoop : we have data logged IATs road where we managed to reduce intake air temperature by 2 degrees using the scoop. To illustrate the effectiveness of the scoop, we devised a simple experiment with a leaf blower to generate flow and an air speed meter to measure the speed of the air entering the airbox. We secured the blower in one position so that it pushed air directly into the lower duct and placed the meter inside the airbox to measure the speed coming in. Results showed a significant increase in speed of almost 50% when using the scoop. Heat and Volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the G20, the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IATâ€™s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. This however, results in a restriction with only one stock air feed to draw air in from. During development we noticed an additional opening into the wheel arch area and took advantage of this by adding a secondary feed to our airbox. Furthermore our sealed airbox also has a heat shield with gold reflective to minimise the radiative heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. In order to maximise volume we made the airbox as large as possible with a recess for potential strut braces. The stock convoluted intake tube is replaced with a smooth carbon tube which is also larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4â€³) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet. The tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbo inlet. Simply having some heat shields alone would result in elevated inlet air temperatures as the engine bay soaks with heat - especially on this engine since the manifold is directly next to the intake. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMain Heat Shield \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA lot of attention was placed on the heat shielding since the intake is located next to the exhaust manifold. For this we used a double layer main shield with a silver finish on the exhaust side and black on the intake side. The silver layer reflects radiant heat from the exhaust and the black layer absorbs and radiant heat on the inlet side. The air gap between the two layers acts as an insulator to stop the conductive heat spreading to the inner layer. The secondary shield can also be seen in the above photo behind the turbo inlet pipe. During testing we found a temperature drop of over 90 degrees C across the shield which can be clearly seen in the thermal imaging video below. Our solution was to completely redesign the entire airbox which maximised volume, increased flow entry openings and created a more favourable filter angle to the turbos. Furthermore we dramatically increased the size of the turbo inlets by as much as 85% when measuring the cross sectional area at the openings. The second objective was met by designing an organically shaped system with a custom rounded panel filter to ensure the airflow path contained no sharp corners and therefore allowed for the flow to remain laminar. With smooth transitions from the filter to the turbo inlets, our intake minimises the formation of turbulence and therefore the turbos are able to operate more efficiently. Heat and Volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the G20, the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IATâ€™s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. This however, results in a restriction with only one stock air feed to draw air in from. During development we noticed an additional opening into the wheel arch area and took advantage of this by adding a secondary feed to our airbox. Furthermore our sealed airbox also has a heat shield with gold reflective to minimise the radiative heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. In order to maximise volume we made the airbox as large as possible with a recess for potential strut braces. The stock convoluted intake tube is replaced with a smooth carbon tube which is also larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4â€³) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet. The tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbo inlet. Finally we use a custom made high-flow dry filter which is ISO tested for filtration performance and has a larger filtration area than the stock filter. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Eventuri G20 B58 intake system consists of a number of components engineered to perform a specific purpose and fabricated to the highest of standards. We did not extend the duct to the other side of the engine bay to use the second opening in the grill simply because of the abrupt flow angle and the restriction in space between the engine and the bonnet catch. Furthermore, using the second opening would stop cold air from entering the engine bay to assist with reducing overall heat soak. The combination of a sealed system with an air scoop results in lower intake temperatures than the stock airbox and avoids heat soak which is a common issue especially on higher powered MINIs. Performance gains measured with these modifications fitted for both stock airbox and Eventuri. Dyno tests were carried out on both a Cooper S and a JCW. The Cooper S had a stage 1 remap for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri. The JCW had a stage 2 remap and downpipe for both the stock airbox and Eventuri. The Cooper S showed a peak gain of approximately 8hp and 11ft-lb of torque but higher mid-range gains of 15hp and 25ft-lb of torque with a good gain through the RPM range. Similarly the stage 2 JCW saw peak gains of 15hp but much higher mid-range gains of 27hp and 26ft-lb of torque with a very good increase in performance throughout the RPM range. These performance gains were measured after only changing the stock airbox for the Eventuri intake - all other modifications were present for both the stock airbox and the Eventuri intake.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe gains measured on the dyno translates on the road to increased part throttle and full throttle response with the car pulling much more eagerly to the redline. The testing was done on the same day back-to-back and temperatures were monitored to ensure consistency. The car was tested firstly with the stock intake - hood closed. We then left the car on the dyno and installed the Eventuri. The car was then run again - hood closed. Several runs were carried out with both configurations to get a consistent result. \u003cstrong\u003eVBox Acceleration Tests\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFinally we took the Stage 1 MINI Cooper S for some road testing using a Vbox unit to record the acceleration from 60-130mph (also 100-200Km\/h). For the Vbox testing our test car had a stage 1 tune for all test runs. Testing was carried out on the same stretch of road - again on the same day to keep variables minimum. The pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the intake tube. This smooth reduction in cross sectional area invokes the Venturi effect where the airflow accelerates whilst maintaining laminar conditions. It can be thought of as a large velocity stack - below is a diagram to show the comparison between our patented design and a regular intake system. Our bespoke filters aid the airflow moving through the housings and allow for an even velocity profile as the airflow exits the housings The MAF tube is CNC machined with tight tolerances to ensure the sensor works within the OEM parameters and therefore does not cause an engine warning code. Since the MAF tube is positioned near the exhaust manifold it is subject to high temperatures and can become heat soaked. To combat this we have insulated the tube with a neoprene rubber wrap which effectively protects the inside of the tube from high temperatures. \u003cstrong\u003eCARBON INTAKE SCOOP\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e The OEM intake system draws in air from behind the front grill, above the radiator. The openings for the intake of ambient air are relatively small and therefore can lead to heat soak of the intake especially on a tuned Mini. The OEM bonnet scoop does not provide air directly to the intake and since the bonnet already has 2 cut-outs under the scoop, we decided to utilise this feature and redevelop the scoop. Our scoop is a direct replacement of the OEM part and clicks into place using the same fastening method. It features 2 inlet ramps which guide external air through the existing cut-outs on the bonnet and into the inlet duct (see below). As the car speeds up, more air is forced into the duct keeping inlet temperatures to a minimum and avoiding the heat soak issue. The scoop has a redesigned profile with a longer top surface to cover the openings which also provides a more aggressive look. Crafted from 100% prepreg carbon fibre, the scoop provides an incredible aesthetic to the vehicle. To further enhance the aesthetic feature - we used a V-shaped split weave with the carbon to give a symmetrical profile which works well as the scoop sits in the middle of the bonnet. \u003cstrong\u003eWATER DRAINAGE\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSince we have a direct airflow path to the filter, it is important that we also allow for water to be drained before reaching the filter. In order to protect against excess water ingress, we have designed several features into the intake components as follows.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1) The top of the scoop covers the openings which stops rainfall entering the duct when the car is at a standstill.\u003cbr\u003e2) The scoop has 2 flow directing ramps which also act as a water barrier by forcing the water to fall down onto the base of the duct rather than moving straight to the filter area.\u003cbr\u003e3) The duct has 2 openings to allow water to drain out - above the radiator and also a drain hole before the filter housing connection.\u003cbr\u003e4) The face of the duct as it meets the filter housing has a wall on which the rubber edging is secured.
